- PERSONAL LIABILITY CLAIMS FOR
- INJURIES FROM VDT RADIATION
- EMISSIONS EXPECTED TO INCREASE
- ------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- C. David Anderson, a Los Angeles attorney, addressed issues of legal
- liability for injuries from video display terminal (VDT) emissions before the
- mid-year Workers' Compensation and Employers' Liability Law Committee of the
- American Bar Association (ABA) on March 11.
-
- Anderson's speech was based on a report he researched and wrote for NoRad
- Corp., of Santa Monica, a developer of radiation-blocking devices, of which he
- is a board member.
-
- Video display terminals are increasingly viewed as potential health hazards
- in light of recent studies reporting increased miscarriages among female VDT
- operators, damage to the eye's focusing mechanism, and skin disorders.
-
- According to Anderson, personal injury claims and potential liability
- resulting from VDT use can be expected to increase if further studies indicate
- a clearer connection between VDTs and human injury.
-
- "Extensive coverage of VDT safety questions in The New York Times, The Wall
- Street Journal, Forbes, Fortune, Time, and other publications have shown a
- significant interest in this growing controversy," said Anderson.
-
- Copies of Anderson's report on legal liability for injuries from VDT
- emissions are available by contacting NoRad Corp., 1549 11th St., Santa
- Monica, CA 90401; 213/395-0800, FAX: 213/458-6397.

- SALES OF SOFTWARE FOR HOME
- COMPUTERS UP 26 PERCENT IN '88
- ------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- The personal computer consumer software industry showed healthy
- gains for the second consecutive year, according to the Software Publishers
- Association (SPA) analysis of 1988 industry-wide software sales.
-
- The data, provided to the accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co. by
- approximately 40 consumer software firms, accounted for over $465 million in
- 1988 domestic retail sales, a 26 percent increase over 1987 sales.
-
- Consumer software, a term used to describe personal computer programs used
- primarily in the home, includes a variety of applications ranging from
- computer games to home banking programs.
-
- In 1988, recreation software comprised 57 percent of overall consumer
- software sales. General home software, which includes personal graphics and
- personal finance programs, comprised 21 percent of the 1988 total. Home
- education software comprised 23 percent of 1988 sales.
-
- For the past two years, sales of MS-DOS recreation software were higher than
- any other format including the well established Commodore 64/128.
-
- This is due to the increasing popularity of the IBM PC and PC compatibles in
- the home and the growing availability of high-quality MS-DOS recreation
- software with enhanced graphics and sound capabilities.
-
- By computer format, approximately 44 percent of total consumer software sales
- is attributed to MS-DOS software, 26 percent to Apple II, 16 percent to
- Commodore 64/128, 7 percent to Macintosh, and 6 percent to other computer
- formats including the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST.
-
- Since 1984, when the SPA first began to monitor domestic retail software
- sales, the consumer software industry has grown approximately 177 percent with
- an average yearly growth of 31 percent.
-
- During the same period, MS-DOS home software sales increased 1,214 percent
- from an estimated $15 million to $203 million.

- LOTUS 1-2-3 RELEASE 2.2: LESS
- COMPLEX, FASTER THAN RELEASE 3.0
- --------------------------------
-
- (BPS) -- By the end of the month, Lotus is expected to announce a new version
- of Lotus 1-2-3, Release 2.2, that is less complex and faster than the long-
- overdue Release 3.0, expected to be released in June.
-
- Apparently Lotus realized that many current Lotus 1-2-3 users might not
- upgrade to Release 3.0 because it is so memory-hungry, requiring scores of
- users to buy lots of additional memory to run it.
-
- Because Release 2.2 will be smaller than Release 3.0, it will run on older
- versions of IBM PCs and compatibles with only 512K of memory. Release 2.2 is
- also reported to be faster than Release 3.0.
-
- Release 2.2 is expected to be shipped about the same time as Release 3.0, in
- June.
